Encaustic, hot wax, is a versatile medium that anyone can use to create stunning pieces in just a few hours. Students will learn the basics of working with wax as a medium and then focus on mastering collage and transfer techniques. Students will be provided with a wide selection of images to work with, but are also encouraged to bring their own photography, vintage imagery, old text or photocopies. We will also explore carbon transfers, incising, and mica powders to finish works. Each student will go home with two finished products.
(all supplies are provided for class)
CONSIDER BRINGING, BUT NOT NECESSARY:
alcohol inks, stamps and ink pads, graphite/charcoal pencils, mica powders
TONER BASED Images/Text - To transfer, you images/text/illustrations must be toner-based PHOTOCOPIES from a copy shop, (Staples, Kinkos, etc.). Transferring will FLIP/MIRROR the images so get them mirror-flipped when photocopying to fix this. Ink-based images WILL NOT TRANSFER!
Any scraping/carving tools
